The Clipse are seeking redemption. For rappers, and literal ÛÛ°
brothers, Malice and Pusha T, the rap biz has been bipolar, ÛÛ
full of ups and downs. While their original planned debut, ÛÛ
Exclusive Audio Footage, was shelved, their proper debut on ÛÛ
Jive Records, Lord Willin (2002), was met with much praise ÛÛ
and near-platinum sales. Unfortunately, label shenanigans ÛÛ
delayed the Virginia duos sophomore salvo by four years. ÛÛ
Like the We Got It 4 Cheap mixtapes their devotees rabidly ÛÛ
consumed in the interim, 2006s Hell Hath No Fury was also ÛÛ
critically lauded (it earned a perfect XXL rating in this ÛÛ
magazine), thanks to reflectivestreet songs like the solemn ÛÛ
Nightmares and the admirable Momma Im So Sorry. Still, ÛÛ
despite all of the adoration, HHNF failed to move weight at ÛÛ
registers, or iTunes, stalling out at about 205,000 copies ÛÛ
sold to date. As persistent with their product as ever, the ÛÛ
Clipse return for the hat trick, this time on Columbia ÛÛ
Records. And despite its grim title, Til the Casket Drops is ÛÛ
more about celebrating life than foreshadowing a tragic ÛÛ
demise. ÛÛ
ÛÛ
From the onset, the discs beats are epic in scale. On the ÛÛ
albums intro track, the Sean C & LV produced Speak of ÛÛ
Freedom, Pusha spits, All the apologies, I wear the cross, I ÛÛ
bear the blame/We in the same group, but I dont share my ÛÛ
brothers pain, as he goes on to talk of music as a self-made ÛÛ
prison. Separately, Malice speaks of a similar sentiment, ÛÛ
when he questions, How was I to know I was happy being piss ÛÛ
poor? over a perfect sound bed of rapid-fire drums, melodic ÛÛ
strings and rock-guitar accents. ÛÛ
ÛÛ
It is key to note that, until now, The Neptunes have been ÛÛ
the sole sound providers of the two previous Clipse albums, ÛÛ
but on Til the Casket Drops, Pharrell and Chad make a little ÛÛ
room for Cali producer DJ Khalil and the aforementioned Sean ÛÛ
C & LV. Rather than being stark contrasts, the outside ÛÛ
contributions blend right in with The Neptunes otherworldly ÛÛ
sonic bleeps and bangsso much so that its Khalil who laces ÛÛ
the bum-rushing, Kanye Westassisted lead single, Kinda ÛÛ
Like a Big Deal, and the standout, dancehall-tinged There ÛÛ
Was a Murder, two menacing additions to the Clipses ÛÛ
catalog that otherwise wouldnt exist had the group not ÛÛ
branched out. ÛÛ
ÛÛ
Just as with their prior releases, it is the duos ability ÛÛ
to go out on a limb, beyond coke-fueled trappings, that ÛÛ
remains their strong suit. On Champion,Malice kicks, A long ÛÛ
way from pumpin in housing projects/Investing in real ÛÛ
estate, weighing out my prospects, while a shimmering synth ÛÛ
and numbing bass play in the background. Lord Willin and ÛÛ
Hell Hath pounded listeners with tales of Pyrex, yet this ÛÛ
album is more nuanced. Never mind the saccharine, Keri ÛÛ
Hilsonlaced radio volley All Eyes on Me the Clipses need ÛÛ
for something resembling a radio hit is to be expected. ÛÛ
Instead, more emphasis should be put on the mid-90s-sounding ÛÛ
Counseling and the bright and boastful Im Good, which ÛÛ
sonically fare much better. ÛÛ
ÛÛ
But dont think for a second that the brothers Thornton have ÛÛ
become milquetoast MCs who have forgotten their struggles. ÛÛ
At least for a moment, the chest-thumping Never Will It Stop ÛÛ
quells such notions and gives a nod to the Clipse of old. ÛÛ
Says Malice, Child of a lesser God, so when I drop the top ÛÛ
on the Porsche/Its my way of reaching for the Lord. ÛÛ
ÛÛ
Playing both sides, though, is nothing new to the pair. ÛÛ
Paranoia-stained verses with touches of spirituality is a ÛÛ
formula the brothers have perfected. Malice, whose pointed ÛÛ
barbs are a highlight of the album, weaves these themes into ÛÛ
his bars more and more often. Consider it hip-hop gospel, ÛÛ
but without the cheesiness. It is most evident on Life ÛÛ
Change, where he admits that he was wretched, pitiful, poor, ÛÛ
blind and naked, before adding, Money, hoes and clothes is ÛÛ
Malices past tense. ÛÛ
ÛÛ
Combining an even mix of maturity and playfulness (check ÛÛ
Back by Popular Demand featuring Camron), the Clipses future ÛÛ
remains as prosperous as ever. With Til the Casket Drops ÛÛ
serving as a return to grace, theres proof positive that ÛÛ
Pusha T and Malice still have much to live for. ÛÛ
