²°°Û ° RELEASE NOTES ÜÜÜÜßßß
° Û ß ßß ßßßßßß Û
Û Like most aspiring producer/songwriter/singers, Û
Û Ryan Leslie started out making his own records as Û
Û a teen because he couldn't afford to pay for Û
Û studio time or producers when he wanted to record Û
Û his demo. Counting self-contained Û
Û producer/artists like Stevie Wonder and Prince as Û
Û his heroes, it's been a long ride from being a Û
Û 19-year-old senior in college who had no music Û
Û contacts - to overseeing studio sessions with the Û
Û likes of Diddy, Usher, Britney Spears, and many Û
Û other of today's top stars. Û
Û Û
Û The road was not easy, as anyone who has tried to Û
Û make it in music would understand. When he Û
Û graduated from Harvard in 1998, Ryan started out Û
Û selling beats for $200 to anyone who would buy - Û
Û a questionable career move for an ivy-league Û
Û graduate. He stayed in the Boston area for a Û
Û while, taking on a community service job to make Û
Û ends meet, and spending his nights in the Û
Û recording studio. Eventually, in the summer of Û
Û 2000, he linked with a young artist named Corey Û
Û "Latif" Williams, and he produced a song that won Û
Û a contest sponsored by Teen People magazine, Û
Û earning them a performance at the famed Apollo Û
Û theatre in Harlem. Û
Û Û
Û A few months later, in 2001, the two had Û
Û generated enough buzz as a producer/artist duo to Û
Û score Latif a record deal with Motown. Though Û
Û initial excitement in the project was strong, the Û
Û album they made together in thirty days took two Û
Û years to get released. In the meantime, Ryan Û
Û returned to a suburb of Boston and began to Û
Û experiment with making his own records again. Û
Û Û
Û Times were tough, the advance money from his work Û
Û on Latif's album ran out, and in late 2002, after Û
Û nearly a year grinding with little to no money Û
Û coming in, Ryan was forced to move back in with Û
Û his parents, who were living in Phoenix. Though Û
Û he was devastated, he remained determined, and Û
Û after a long talk, his father gave Ryan a glimmer Û
Û of hope, offering to max out the family's credit Û
Û cards to buy the keyboards and recording software Û
Û needed to create a modest project studio. Moved Û
Û by this vote of confidence in his potential, Ryan Û
Û vowed that he would do whatever it took to repay Û
Û the nearly $15,000 worth of equipment - even if Û
Û it meant going to law school and getting a job Û
Û more suited to his academic pedigree. Û
Û Û
Û For the next five months, Ryan locked himself in Û
Û a room, eating infrequently and sleeping even Û
Û less, spending countless hours formulating a Û
Û distinct sound that would prove useful when in Û
Û the spring of 2003, his music career took an Û
Û unexpected turn. Encouraged by his long-time Û
Û music lawyer and advisor, Ed Woods, Ryan got on a Û
Û plane to New York to take a 30-day contract as a Û
Û music production intern for former Bad Boy Hitman Û
Û Younglord. One week into his internship, a record Û
Û they created together became "Keep Giving Your Û
Û Love To Me", a song performed by Beyoncé for the Û
Û Bad Boys II movie soundtrack. That record led to Û
Û a meeting with Sean "Diddy" Combs, who was Û
Û supervising the project. Û
Û Û
Û Honored by the opportunity, Ryan played a few of Û
Û the instrumentals he had created while in Phoenix Û
Û for Diddy, and there was one in particular that Û
Û caught the Bad Boy Records CEO's attention. Û
Û Though it was a simple track, consisting mostly Û
Û of a conga loop and a guitar riff, the magic in Û
Û the music emerged when Ryan played a song he had Û
Û written and recorded to the track, called "Hot 2 Û
Û Nite". Thoroughly impressed, Diddy offered Ryan a Û
Û producer management contract on the spot, and the Û
Û song became the first single for New Edition's Û
Û Bad Boy album. Û
Û Û
Û Diddy immediately put Ryan on every project that Û
Û came across his blackberry, and Ryan produced a Û
Û string of records, including Loon's 2003 summer Û
Û hit "Down For Me". He shared his unique talent Û
Û with everyone from Britney Spears, B5, Cheri Û
Û Dennis, Danity Kane, and many other Diddy-helmed Û
Û projects. In six months, he had collected enough Û
Û money from advances to be able to repay his Û
Û father, and after sending a check home, he Û
Û requested that his equipment be shipped to New Û
Û York, where he set up a project studio in a Û
Û one-bedroom apartment in Harlem. Û
Û Û
Û Simultaneously during that time, Ryan inked a Û
Û publishing deal with Tommy Mottola's Aspen Songs, Û
Û cementing his relationship with two of the most Û
Û legendary and notorious executives in the music Û
Û industry. Under the mentorship of Diddy and Û
Û Mottola, Ryan began to absorb the mannerisms of a Û
Û savvy entrepreneurial music executive. Û
Û Û
Û Soon the word began to spread of his unorthodox Û
Û approach to record-making (eschewing programming Û
Û and beat machines for real-time playing of Û
Û instruments and on-the-fly song writing), and Û
Û people began reaching out to Ryan for his Û
Û "NextSelection" sound. He produced singles for Û
Û Donell Jones ("Better Start Talking"), Cheri Û
Û Dennis ("I Love U"), and dancehall legends Tanto Û
Û Metro & Devonte ("News For You"). He also signed Û
Û a recording contract as an artist with Universal Û
Û through Mottola's imprint. Though he recorded an Û
Û album for Universal in 2004 between projects for Û
Û other artists, his production schedule kept him Û
Û from paying any real attention to promoting a Û
Û single. Û
Û Û
Û It was when Usher called on him to produce some Û
Û records for his new label, US Records, that Ryan, Û
Û being the same age as Usher, became inspired to Û
Û champion his NextSelection brand by developing an Û
Û artist of his own. After writing and producing Û
Û the title track "Private" for Usher's act One Û
Û Chance's debut album, Ryan returned to New York Û
Û and met a strikingly beautiful young artist named Û
Û Cassie with a distinct vocal texture and a unique Û
Û point of view. With the help of some coaxing by Û
Û her mother, he convinced Cassie to record a song Û
Û with him. Encouraged again by his attorney, Ed Û
Û Woods, he played the record for Mottola, who Û
Û immediately signed Ryan's young protégé to a Û
Û management contract, urging the two to continue Û
Û the recording process. Û
Û Û
Û The next record he wrote and produced for her, a Û
Û song called "Me & U", would prove to be a Û
Û defining work in Ryan's career - earning him his Û
Û first number one hit, and the opportunity to work Û
Û as an executive producer alongside Diddy, who Û
Û outbid 2 other labels to partner with him on Û
Û Cassie's project. "Me & U" went on to be the Û
Û biggest record at radio in the history of Û
Û Atlantic Records (Bad Boy's distributor), and Û
Û Ryan's dream to introduce the world to the Û
Û NextSelection brand was achieved. Û
Û Û
Û The success of Cassie's project also proved to be Û
Û definitive in a different way for Ryan, who had Û
Û partnered with a young on-line media entrepreneur Û
Û named Rasheed Richmond to wage a ground-breaking Û
Û internet marketing campaign using non-traditional Û
Û media to raise awareness about Cassie, Û
Û NextSelection, and the infectious song he had Û
Û written for her. Thanks to their joint efforts, Û
Û she became the first major new artist to break Û
Û from social networking phenomenon MySpace.com, Û
Û prompting so many internet searches that Yahoo Û
Û crowned her the first "Internet diva". Û
Û Û
Û Fueled by this momentum, Ryan's next moves will Û
Û be made with laser focus on brand development and Û
Û will be watched intently by an evolving music Û
Û industry. He is building a management company, Û
Û led by Sean Collins, a long-time friend and early Û
Û supporter who invested in him during the early Û
Û stages of his career, to develop and nurture Û
Û budding production talent. He is expanding his Û
Û on-line media properties with Rasheed Richmond to Û
Û create a network of sites dedicated to Û
Û entertainment content developed by NextSelection. Û
Û He is assembling a roster of acts that will Û
Û embody the characteristics of his signature 4 D's Û
Û - drive, desire, discipline and dedication. Û
Û Û
Û Most importantly, amongst all of his endeavors, Û
Û he's campaigning as Ryan Leslie - the artist. Û
Û With a goal to fill arenas around the world where Û
Û he has already been performing for small crowds Û
Û of die-hard NextSelection fans, he is pursuing Û
Û the dream that started his foray into music in Û
Û the first place: being an entertainer. His live Û
Û show is explosive, channeling of the energy of a Û
Û young James Brown mixed with the swagger of a Û
Û modern day Marvin Gaye. The soundtrack to the Û
Û Ryan Leslie experience is just as engaging. Û
Û Fusing thick analogue synths, heavy drums and Û
Û lush vocal harmonies, his double album, Û
Û consisting of his best unreleased gems like "The Û
Û Way That U Move", "Just Right" and "Used 2 Be", Û
Û plus an entirely fresh crop of newly-inspired Û
Û recordings, will be a collection of all the songs Û
Û he wouldn't sell to anyone else, songs that he Û
Û really loves, stories told in a way only he can Û
Û tell them. Û
Û Û
Û A look at Ryan's daily schedule, which usually Û
Û starts on-line at 5am and continues (with Û
Û meetings, calls, rehearsals and studio sessions) Û
Û into the wee hours of the following morning, Û
Û suggests that he may have too much on his plate Û
Û to lead the life of an ordinary twenty-something Û
Û year old. Thankfully, his approach to life is, Û
Û arguably, extraordinary. Û
Û Û
Û Û
Û He Is The Future Of Quality R&B Music Û
Û Û
Û Enjoy this one Û
